Supervision for Mental Decluttering
Clinical Supervision to Support Psychologists with Metal Decluttering
By Jenni Avidon, Principal Clinical Psychologist of NorthStar Academy
Over time in my work as a clinical psychologist and supervisor, I’ve learned that mental decluttering isn’t just a nice-to-have—it’s essential. Imagine trying to support clients through the complexities of their lives while my own mind feels like a messy, overstuffed closet. When my thoughts are scattered, it’s harder to be present. But when I take the time to sort through them—to organize and prioritize—everything shifts. I show up more grounded, more effective, and more connected, both to my clients and to myself.
Supervision has been a key part of that process. It gives me space to reflect, to process the emotional weight of the work, and to see things from a fresh perspective. Talking things through with a supervisor often feels like rummaging through a cluttered attic—you don’t know what you’ll find, but somewhere in the mess are insights that can really shift how you see a case. Those conversations help me clear mental space and sharpen my focus on what truly matters: my clients’ needs.
Mental decluttering has also been crucial for my emotional resilience. Without it, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed or to carry the weight of my clients’ pain long after a session ends. Practices like mindfulness, journaling, or even just pausing to reset my priorities help me create a clearer internal landscape—one that’s better equipped to handle the demands of this work without burning out.
This isn’t just a personal insight—there’s solid research backing it up. Studies show that a cluttered mind can affect productivity and increase anxiety. For me, taking the time to declutter mentally isn’t a luxury—it’s part of how I care for myself so I can care for others well.
Ultimately, I see mental decluttering as a core part of being an intentional, effective therapist. Through supervision, reflection, and a commitment to mental clarity, I’m better able to guide my clients through their own healing journeys—with more presence, empathy, and purpose
