The Power of Group Supervision: Connection, Insight, and Collective Wisdom
The Power of Group Supervision: Connection, Insight, and Collective Wisdom
By Jenni Avidon, Principal Clinical Psychologist of NorthStar Academy
One of the most enriching parts of my work these days is facilitating group supervision. There’s something uniquely powerful about being in a room (or a Zoom call) with a group of therapists, all bringing their own questions, challenges, and insights to the table.
While individual supervision offers depth and personal reflection, group supervision brings something different—and equally valuable. It offers perspective, a sense of community, and the realisation that you’re not alone in what you’re navigating.
After 30 years in clinical practice, I’ve seen firsthand how isolating this work can be. Whether you’re in private practice, a busy public setting, or somewhere in between, it’s easy to carry the emotional weight of your work quietly, without much space to decompress or hear, “Me too.”
That’s where group supervision shines.
In a well-held group, something quite special happens. One person brings a dilemma to the group—maybe they’re feeling stuck with a client, unsure about an intervention, or grappling with a boundary issue. And as others reflect, share their own experiences, or gently offer another lens, the room fills with clarity and compassion. Often, it’s not just the person presenting who benefits—everyone does.
Group supervision creates space for:
- Multiple perspectives – You gain insight not just from the supervisor, but from peers with varied backgrounds and styles.
- Normalisation – Realising others face similar challenges can be profoundly reassuring.
- Shared wisdom – The collective knowledge in the room is often more powerful than any one voice.
- Community and connection – It reminds us that we’re part of something bigger than ourselves.
I’ve had supervisees tell me that group supervision helped them rediscover their confidence, feel less alone, and re-engage with their work in a more energised, thoughtful way. That’s not by chance—it’s because when we come together with openness and respect, learning naturally unfolds.
As a facilitator, I see my role as holding the space gently but firmly—making sure everyone feels safe to share, ask questions, and reflect without judgment. I aim to foster a sense of safety, curiosity, and mutual care—because that’s what allows real growth to happen.
If you’re feeling the pull to connect with other clinicians, deepen your reflective practice, and feel part of a supportive professional community, group supervision might be exactly what you need.
I offer ongoing groups for therapists at various stages of their careers, and spaces open up periodically. If you’re interested, reach out here or book a brief consult to explore whether it’s the right fit for you.
In a field that asks us to hold so much, group supervision offers a rare opportunity to be held, heard, and strengthened—together.
